Oscars 2013 Red Carpet: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Culture

Lights. Camera. Action. The red carpet was rolled out for the final time this 2013 awards season. The Oscars always promise to be an affair that marks and sets the tone for the upcoming fashion season. This year, however, might have been the exception. While there were plenty of beautiful dresses and hairdos on the red carpet Sunday, no one came close to making red carpet history. Here is my fashion summary of the 2013 Oscars' red carpet:

Fashion Trends:

Light colors, heavy bead work, and effortless hair were the major trends on the red carpet. The theme of the night definitely was old Hollywood glamour. A lot of stars opted for understated hues like creams, light greys, and shades of pink.

The makeup was also understated and many starlets chose to go for either a nude or a classic red lip to balance out their dresses. The majority of the makeup looks for the night were natural and flawless.

Overall, nothing was over the top but instead just very understated.

Hair Trends:

1. Old Hollywood Glamour: Besides looking in tip top shape after having a baby and donning Louis Vuitton on the red carpet, Reese Witherspoon's hair looked so effortless and beautiful … What's your secret, Reese? I'd love to know. Old Hollywood hair seems to be the go-to style this award season.

2. Pixie Cut: First, Anne Hathaway and now, Charlize Theron. While I am a fan of the pixie cut, I do acknowledge it is a very tough look to pull off. Personally, I think Hathaway has done a great job up until now (keep reading to find out why I changed my mind) using her hair cut as beautiful accessory to compliment her style. Who looks better? You decide.

Top 3 Looks:

1. Jessica Chastain: One of the first people to walk the red carpet on Oscar night, Jessica Chastain, looked breathtaking in this Armani Prive number. While the dress fit her like a glove, the color was very safe and familiar. Personally, I prefer Chastain's McQueen dress from last year's awards. With that said, Chastain was definitely one of the best dressed at the ceremony.

2. Halle Berry: As my friend would say, "Halle Berry would look hot even if she wore a paper bag on the red carpet." I agree totally, but no need to worry, Berry never fails to impress on the red carpet. The Oscars were no exception. This Gucci number is stunning and one of the only dresses from last night that actually dared to make a statement.

3. Jennifer Lawrence: Lawrence looked beautiful in this Dior Haute Couture number. Again, I think it is a safe color but she pulled it off effortlessly.

Biggest Fashion Faux Pas & Disappointment:

Anne Hathaway: O, Anne! I am such a big fan and I was looking forward to a beautiful Valentino ensemble … It makes me sad that you decided to go for this Prada number instead. The dress is tailored to her body perfectly, but maybe a little bit too much? Can something be over-tailored? Also, the dress does nothing to compliment her pixie style hair cut. The color is very safe and washes out Anne's complexion and does nothing for her gorgeous hair cut. A  lot of people seem to agree, if you don't believe me follow the Twitter hashtag #LesNipplerables. But nonetheless, you definitely deserved the win for your role in Les Miserables!

Best Facial Hair: Ok ok … I just sort of put Bradley Cooper in here because he is nice to look at … And yes, I think he should have shaved … But I'll forgive him just this once. Besides, he looked a lot better than Clooney and his beard.

Overall, there were definitely a lot of pretty dresses on the red carpet but nothing that will be remembered in the years to come. Unfortunately, the 2013 Academy Awards will be forgotten for their fashion statements.
