Quentin Tarantino Oscar Speech Proves Director Really Only Loves Himself

Culture

Last night at the 85th Academy Awards Quentin Tarantino beat out Zero Dark Thirty, Amour, Moonrise Kingdom, and Flight to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Django Unchained.

The speech that followed his win was ... more than a little self-indulgent. To put it in Quentin Tarantino's own words:

"I actually think that like.... if people are knowing my movies 30 or 50 years from now it's gonna be because of the characters that I created, and I really only got one chance to get it right. I have to cast the right people to make those characters come alive and hope they live a long time... and boy, this time did I do it."

He did, however, give a little credit to the cast of Django. But by far, the majority of Quentin's speech was about himself, and the excellent things that he had done. Contrasted with the other big name acceptance speeches of the night, such as:  Argo, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Day-Lewis, Christoph Waltz, Ang Lee and Jennifer Lawrence (who, despite falling, was still very well composed and adorable), Tarantino was by far the biggest self-promoter of the night. The others were truly very humble.

At the end of the day though, Quenin Tarantino still got his second Oscar and a big pat on the back. Which is good, because I for one will definitely pay money to see his next work.
