South Carolina Election Results: New Voter ID Law in Effect

Impact

Voters who went to the polls today in South Carolina's first congressional district had to do something they've never had to do before, show a photo ID.

The law was put in place after first being blocked by the U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. for the 2012 presidential election. The court, however, decided that the photo ID requirement did not discriminate against minority voters and was instituted on January 1, 2013. As of noon today, No Voter ID issues had been reported to the South Carolina Election Commission according to spokesperson Chris Whitmire.

The field of 16 candidates will likely split the vote, forcing the top candidates will be forced into a run off election, to take place on April 2. A majority of 50 percent is needed in order to bypass a runoff, which is not expected to happen.

Results of the election are just now coming in with less than 0% of precincts reporting, Elizabeth Colbert Busch is leading the pack of Democrats. Former Governor Mark Sanford is leading among the Republican candidates.
