Boston Marathon Attack: Bombs Kill 2, Injures 22

Impact

Two explosions went off in the area by the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, leaving dozens injured and at least two people dead. While authorities did not immediately say what caused the explosions, the Boston Police Department confirmed that they were looking into them.

The explosions erupted just before 3:00 p.m. about 10 to 15 seconds apart, according to MyFoxBoston.com. This was more than four hours after the men’s race started, meaning there were several thousand runners who had yet to finish the race.

Reuters reported that the Boston Marathon headquarters are on lock down after news of the blasts. They later said that a third explosion occurred at the JFK Library at the University of Massachusetts campus, but the Boston police commissioner is unsure if the JFK library explosion is related to the other two detonations.

A federal source told ABC News “there is no sign of any radiological material involved in the explosion.”

The authorities helped runners affected by the explosions leave the scene while spectators were brought to a medical tent originally designated for runners, the Associated Press reported. The Associated Press also said in a tweet that two more explosive devices were found and were in the process of being dismantled.

Massachusetts General Hospital claimed that 19 injured people were being treated there, and Tufts Medical Center reported they were treating nine people.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick posted a tweet saying, “We are currently in contact with federal, state, and city officials.”

ABC News confirmed this from a comment by a White House official that stated, “The president has been notified of the incident in Boston … his administration is in contact with state and local authorities."

The Boston police are currently searching remaining bags left by marathon participants and spectators who fled the scene of the blast.
