MIT Shooter: Still On the Loose

Around 10:48 PM Thursday evening, gunshots were reported on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Those gunshots were fired into a police officer with the MIT campus police, who was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead from his injuries. The Middlesex District Attorney's office issued this release:

“Massachusetts State Police and Cambridge Police are investigating a fatal shooting this evening in Cambridge, Middlesex Acting District Attorney Michael Pelgro and Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert Haas announced this evening.

“An MIT campus police officer responding to a report of a disturbance in the area of Vasser and Main streets was reportedly shot. According to authorities, the officer was found evidencing multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased.

“Authorities launched an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.

“There are no other victims. No arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing."

There has been no word on the status of the shooter, but the university is still advising students to stay indoors as of 12:28 AM Friday:

Update on shooter situation.  Responding agencies are actively investigating the situation, which remains very fluid at this time.  Police continue to sweep the campus.  Stay indoors and remain inside until further notice.
