White House Correspondents' Dinner: Do They Need an Executive Producer for Next Year's Show?

Impact

So here's the deal, the camera is actually just panning around people eating and talking right now. President Obama is not scheduled to speak for another hour, so until then we're just seeing people talk and eat their food. Apart from the people that move to the front to shamelessly or secretively take photos of President Obama, this is not interesting television.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a consumer of photos of interesting celebrities mingling, and I'm sure photos of actresses Marissa Tomei and Connie Britton engaged in conversation, or How I Met Your Mother's Josh Radnor eating his food, will be on the likes of U.S. Magazine and People tomorrow.

But why on earth are we spending so much time watching not much happening? The White House Correspondents' Dinner had an equally voyeuristic red carpet earlier this evening, with the CSPAN camera zooming in on the interviews being conducted by other reporters present. It's clearly evident that CSPAN is trying to promote the event without having worked with the event's organizers on what would be the most consumer-friendly approach to programming.

Next year I would not be surprised if we saw production value go up, and with an online and television audience watching that has to kill yet an another hour right now, maybe we can get one of these gazillion celebrities to come on and entertain the audience next year?
