2013 Kentucky Derby News: Black Onyx and Fear the Kitten Scratched from Today's Race

In the latest change to the field of horses participating in the Kentucky Derby two horses were scratched from the roster and will not race in today’s race. Black Oynx and Fear the Kitten were deemed ineligible to compete, leaving the field at 19.

Black Onyx was scratched on Friday morning. According to his trainer, Kelly Breen, he had a bone chip in his left front ankle. It is unclear if Black Onyx will need surgery for the injury.

It was too late to add Fear the Kitten to the roster when news of Black Onyx’s injury broke. Just hours before the news of Black Onyx’s injury broken, Fear the Kitten was scratched from the race due to his status as an alternate. There is no procedure to reserve this automatic rule.

That means going into today’s Kentucky Derby will be 19 horses instead of the standard roster of 20.
