In an amazing race Orb ridden by Joel Rosario has come to claim the most prestigious title in horse racing, beating a field filled by an amazing slate of competitors.
Orb was a favorite in the initial pre-race speculation and pulled it together to the delight of a huge crowd. But it was not a blowout, as Orb did not take the lead until late in the race
Palace Malice took an early lead in the race but Oxbow quickly caught up with him. But it was in the final turn and stretch where orb blasted out as though his life depended on the race, moving with incredible speed. Orb ran the race in 2:02:89.
This 139th running of the Kentucky Derby was one of the most dramatic, with the field muddy from pre race storms. The storms cleared up for the race but the track did not, being some of the worst conditions seen in recent Kentucky Derby history. Both Orb and Rosario were covered in mud at the end of the race.
Joel Rosario will take home a $2 million dollar purse and the garland of roses.
