South Carolina Special Election 2013: Elizabeth Colbert Busch Fights Back Against Whisper Campaign About Divorce

Impact

Political campaigning is not the cleanest of professions. In tight races morals fall by the wayside and everything gets utilized regardless of taste. In the South Carolina Special Election Elizabeth Colbert Busch is learning this first hand.

Foster Friess, a supporter of conservative Christian causes, sent out an explanation on his website as to why people should vote for Sanford,

"The Democrats' main case against Mark Sanford is he cannot be trusted because he has gone through a divorce and is remarrying. Ironically, Colbert, according to Erick Erickson of Red State, also divorced and even was arrested during the course of those proceedings for contempt of court charges."

The story gets even more intriguing when reports of a push poll by a conservative group known as SSI Polling surfaced. The questions included,

- "What would you think of Elizabeth Colbert Busch if I told you a judge held her in contempt of court at her divorce proceedings?"

- "What would you think of Elizabeth Colbert Busch if she had done jail time?"

To fight back against this, Colbert Busch went to the air to describe the incident, which occurred 20 years ago during a messy divorce in the video above. She describes the incidents as such,

"Twenty-seven years ago, I left an abusive marriage. I left because I had to protect myself and my children. I went to court to try and get help, and during that time, the judge became very frustrated with the situation, and that’s how I wound up where I was. As a mother, would I do it again? You bet I would. I am a mother first, and I will protect my children, today, yesterday, and tomorrow. I would do it over and over and over again."

She went on to say, that the airing of the information out of context was "a pathetic, desperate, display of behavior."
