The teaser trailer for the film adaptation of Orson Scott Car’s science fiction masterpiece Ender’s Game has just popped up on the internet. The 2-minute summary of the upcoming film runs through all the basic motions of a sci-fi film: some extraterrestrial villain, one man who can stop it — or in this case, a boy — neon laser beams, and unisex leotard uniforms. However, in terms of overall quality, the trailer exceeds expectations by bringing the steel.
Summit Entertainment is bringing the later Twilight-level production values for this big time screen version of the New York Times bestseller. Fighter jets explode, space crafts stretch through the upper atmosphere, and complex CGI crane shots permeate this otherwise kiddy-kid feeling action-adventure.
However, the credibility of the cast makes this presumably PG-rated film seem more Hunger Games than Spy Kids. True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld, The Help’s Viola Davis, Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin, and Ben Kingsley are bringing their Oscar-nominated street cred to the child’s film.
Although the inconsistency of Summit Entertainment brings the ultimate quality of this soon-to-be blockbuster into question quite early, the November 1 release date is a vote of confidence from not just the producers who made it, but from other studios, who have yet to put up another film on that weekend to compete with it.
