Biebermania? Poll Shows Broad Dislike Of Justin Bieber Across Political Spectrum

Impact

Some musical tastes reign true across political partisanship. In a recent poll conducted by Public Policy Polling, statistics across party lines rated Justin Bieber as the least favorable musician among other famous pop stars such as Taylor Swift, Adele, Beyonce, and Justin Timberlake. Democrats, Republicans, and Independents all rated only Bieber negatively across all political groups. Over 50% of those polled rated other pop musicians such as Chris Brown and Skrillex unfavorably.

Some of the more surprising statistics illustrated general negativity towards many popular female vocalists, such as Lady Gaga and Rihanna, both of whom received less than 40% in favorable votes. Neither lady singer received encouragement for a presidential campaign, either. Each singer earned only 9% and 7% respectively of prospective pop star presidential nods, with Justin Timberlake earning the majority of favor at 34%, followed by Adele at 19%. Presidential favorite Timberlake was, however, discouraged from spending his time doing nearly anything other than producing music, with 40% of voters promoting his music-recording time over 22% of voters encouraging acting for Timberlake and only 7% promoting a reunion effort with ‘N SYNC.

Although discouraged from doing anything but making music, not all voters polled JT as representative of their favorite genre of music. 24% of voters chose country music as their favorite, with classical music a close 2% behind. Rap did not fare well in the musical genre category, earning only 1% of the favorite music category.

Why the low-level love for rap music? Where does the hate for Bieber come from? Why did voters prefer to see Beyonce in the presidential seat instead hubby Jay-Z? The music industry spends millions of dollars promoting the image of the musicians at the top of the pop charts, some more successfully than others. Some musicians behave in a way that not even the best of publicists could hide, marring their images forever. Regardless of all of this, however, opinions about pop music vary enormously among individuals, as well as being subject to the one unavoidable curse of the pop category – time. Pop stars, like pop stars before them and pop stars to come, come and go with the fashions. Fads spread like wildfire before becoming weakened by cliché or completely obsolete, and popular music is no different.

Bieber’s current lack of support may be the counter-swing to his enormous popularity just a few years ago. With the right publicity and some decent musical accompaniment, however, he just may swing back again.
