Google Key Lime Pie: What Is It?

Culture

Aside from being a delicious summer dessert, Key Lime Pie is the code name for the new iteration of Android's  OS. It is set to be released as part of Android 5.0, but don't expect to hear a lot about it at the Google I/O conference. Truthfully, no one has any idea what kind of features Key Lime will have. Everything that has come out has been speculation and rumors. One of the most popular rumors is that Key Lime will introduce profiles into the OS. Profiles would help to enable your phones sleep mode by not fetching information from Twitter, etc. while you are sleeping. This would also help to conserve battery life. Other rumors flying around include enhanced social-media integration, SMS cross-profile synching, multi-device support, and built-in video chat.

It really isn't expected that Key Lime Pie will be released on May 15, instead most are preparing for an Android 4.3 update. Sundar Pichai, the new head of Andorid, said that the Google I/O won't be focused on launches but instead on giving some much needed developer love. Speaking to Wired, Pichai said;

"It’s going to be different. It’s not a time when we have much in the way of launches of new products or a new operating system. Both on Android and Chrome, we’re going to focus this I/O on all of the kinds of things we’re doing for developers, so that they can write better things. We will show how Google services are doing amazing things on top of these two platforms."

Well, for the sake of excitement and something to actually talk about, I hope that isn't the case. Either way, we'll find out soon enough. The three-day conference kicks off at 9am PT and 12 ET.
