Caleb “Kai” McGillvary Arrested: Viral Hitchhiker YouTube Star Wanted For Alleged Murder Of Joseph Galfry

Impact

When “Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker” abruptly arose to internet fame from a viral video we all laughed at the unlikely hero’s bizarre interview as he described the rescue of a California utility worker. Now he has been arrested and charged with the murder of a lawyer in New Jersey. It gets weirder.

Caleb “Kai” McGillvary, 24, rose to fame in February after he circumvented an attack on two Pacific Gas & Electric employees who had been struck with a car by Jett Simmons McBride, who he was hitchhiking with

McBride then proceeded to get out of the vehicle and carry out an assault on one of the female P&G workers. Kai was able to fend off the attack by repeatedly striking McBride with a hatchet. The swear-ridden TV news interview that followed the event has been watched more than 3.9 million times on YouTube.

As someone who preferred to be called “home free,” Kai decided take his new found fame and tour the country to meet his fans. He ended up in New York City's Time Square which is where he met the lawyer he now stands accused of murdering.

The lawyer was 73-year-old Joseph Galfry, Jr. Galfry was found dead in his home two days after meeting McGillvary in New York and inviting him into his home. Twenty-four hours later the encounter turned violent. "Kai" McGillvary’s Facbeook updates in the days preceding the murder were troublesome. In his last post on Tuesday he asked, "What would you do" if you awoke in a stranger’s house and found you’d been drugged and sexually assaulted? (The actual Facebook post is a bit vivid/ graphic). One commenter suggested using a hatchet — to which McGillvary responded, “I like your idea.”

Galfry was found dead due to blunt force trauma.

Police haven’t commented on what weapon was used in the murder of the attorney, all anyone has said is they believe everyone is safer with Kai off the streets.
