Oklahoma Tornado Death Toll: Not as High as Previously Reported

Impact

Reuters reports that Amy Elliott, chief administrative officer at the Oklahoma City Medical Examiner's Office, has this morning said that the death toll from Monday's devastating tornado stands at 24 confirmed dead. Previous reports from the Examiner's Office had put the figure at 51, including 20 children.

"We have got good news. The number right now is 24," Elliot said, adding that the previous figure most likely reflected some double counting, "There was a lot of chaos." She cautioned, however, that additional bodies may still be recovered.

President Barack Obama is due to make a statement at 10am EST, after having declared a major disaster area in Oklahoma and ordering federal aid to help supplement local efforts.
