Los Angeles Election Results: Eric Garcetti Wins Election And Becomes Mayor of LA

Impact

EricToday sees the end of a historic reign and the beginning of another. The voters of Los Angeles headed to the polls in order to decide who will replace outgoing Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Two candidates are fighting for the position, Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel, both Democrats.

Villaraigosa was a large figure during his mayoral reign, being catapulted into office with a grand imagination and vision. The difficulty of filling Villaraigosa's shoes combined with a lack of voter enthusiasm means that expected voter turnout for this election is low.

But despite that the election will be a crucial one, as the next mayor will have to deal with a big issue - Los Angeles’s $7.7 billion budget and the prospect of spending outpacing revenue for year.

Also on the ballot are two propositions. Proposition C is a measure that would urge Congress to overturn the controversial Citizens United Supreme Court Decision. Proposition D is a measure that would regulate and tax medical marijuana dispensaries, limiting the number to 135 and increasing taxes on them by 20%.
