All the votes have finally been counted and the next mayor of Los Angeles is Eric Garcetti. He won 53.92% to 46.07% over his opponent Wendy Greuel. He will be the first Jewish mayor in Los Angeles history.
Garcetti gave what sounded like a victory speech as the vote totals showed him ahead, saying to supporters,
"I say to you this: Tonight is just the beginning. Our work has just begun. Tomorrow we roll up our sleeves and we get to work rebuilding a great Los Angeles.
Thank you Los Angeles. Onward."
After he gave that speech Greuel would conceded, cementing Garcetti’s victory. To mark the occasion he sent out a tweet to his followers.
The mayoral election had low turnout despite having $33 million total spent during it, a record for a Los Angeles mayoral race. It is expected to be a one in four turnout number at best, although the true figure will not be known for several days.
Garcetti will face a number of problems in his four year term, ranging from the city budget to infrastructure,. But for know he can bask in his victory. At least until the next election.
