Sergio Garcia Tiger Woods: After Racist Remark, He Owes Tiger More Than 'Fried Chicken'

Culture

Sergio Garcia joined Fuzzy Zoeller in wanting to turn dinner with Tiger Woods into a good old-fashioned soul food meal worthy of Sylvia's in Harlem or Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles in Los Angeles. In an attempt to take Tiger down a peg, Garcia said "We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken."

Fried chicken jokes show that racists, particularly the ones that are sports fans and players, are not very creative and are quite misinformed about the eating habits of black people. My recommendation is to pick up a book, do some research, and get some new material. But even more importantly, Garcia would do well to remember that if it wasn't for Tiger Woods his earning potential would be considerably lower than it is today.

Since Tiger's arrival in 1996, golf's appeal has skyrocketed. Tour money has increased dramatically and endorsement deals are commonplace. In 1995, only 45 golfers earned over $500,000. In 2010 that number had grown to 247. Multi-million dollar endorsement deals were extremely rare until 1996 when Tiger signed with American Express and Nike. In fact, Nike was a newcomer to golf until they signed their deal with Tiger. Video games companies like EA Sports also pay big bucks, thanks to Tiger, for endorsement deals.

Back in 1997, Zoeller said "That little boy is driving well and he's putting well. He's doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Got it? … Or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."

Rather than serving fried chicken, Garcia and Zoeller should be serving first-cut boneless ribeye with Maine lobster, asparagus, broccoli, and carrots. Or they can travel down to Houston and have some good old fashioned Creole or Cajun soul food.

Either way, it's the 21st century. So here are two things that Garcia and Zoeller need to realize about black people in general and black men specifically:

1. Black people eat sushi too.

2. We better get the big piece.
