San Antonio Flooding: 1 Dead, 1 Missing, and Over 100 Rescued Following Torrential Rain

Impact

Massive flooding occurred in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, killing one person with another missing and 130 needing to be rescued from their homes and cars. San Antonio International Airport reportedly recorded almost 10 inches of rain since midnight, marking the second wettest day ever recorded in San Antonio according to reports. CNN also reports that water levels on the San Antonio river have reached record levels at Loop 410, with the National Weather Service saying it reached 34.2 feet at 10 a.m. Saturday, higher than the previous record of 32.57 feet back 1998.

According to San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Christian Bove, water levels have reached as high as four feet in some homes. Bove said that the body of a 29-year-old woman was found after she was swept away by the floodwaters after climbing on the roof of her car. Rescuers are also searching for another person who is missing after being trapped in their car.

San Antonio resident Mary Alice Galicia described the flooding in an interview with CNN affiliate KNE5: "It was underwater 20 minutes ago. I came over here. I own the property and my daughter said that she couldn't get to her car. Her car's all flooded. The property — the water's all swarming through the whole house. I just came over to check to see what I could do, but there's nothing that I can do right now."

Although there has been a break in the rain as it moved east, Mayor Julian Castro earlier asked motorists to stay off the roads, saying, "Many roads throughout the city continue to be impassable and dangerous. Just because it's not raining at the moment, does not mean that the threat has passed."

While the highest recorded amount of rainfall today was 15.5 inches at Olmos Creek at Dresden Drive, the National Weather Service does not regard it as a record as Olmos Creek is not an official weather station.
