The AP requested the emails over three months ago, but many agencies have not responded. The Labor Department at first asked for $1 million for its emails. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed the existence of the emails yesterday, and assured the press all government email accounts are subject to oversight. However, some say the secret emails create problems for government transparency. “What happens when that person doesn’t work there anymore? He leaves and someone makes a request [to review emails] in two years. Who’s going to know to search the other accounts?,” said Kel McClanahan, executive director of open government group National Security Counselors.
