When it comes to numbers, Broadway hasn't had the best year: Broadway League figures indicate that the attendance for the 2012-2013 season was down 6% from the year before. Put in ever cruder terms; last year 12 million people went to the theater, this year only 11 million did. What the numbers don't reveal is that this season on Broadway a handful of really A+ shows have hit the stage. This Sunday, the Tony Awards will honor that handful of shows and, as always, do anything it can to improve the theater-going numbers for next season.

The 67th annual Tony Awards have the advantage of two very high-profile musicals leading the nominee pack, and a few celebrity names thrown into the actors categories. Cyndi Lauper's musical Kinky Boots leads nominees with 13 nods, while the British import Matilda

When it comes to celebrity nominees, audiences can take their pick of Tom Hanks, Nathan Lane, David Hyde Pierce, Tom Sturridge, or Cicely Tyson. And then of course there is the host, the endlessly crowd-pleasing (and primetime recognizable) Neil Patrick Harris.

Whether or not these names and a steady stream of performances will be able to attact the numbers remains to be seen, but our live blog will be following along with every high and low note of theater's biggest night.
