8 Flash Words the NSA Flags to Pinpoint Terrorists

Impact

The NSA has been spying on the public's emails, but you would never believe which words the government uses to identify potential terrorists.

This list was found on Reddit when James Bamford, a reporter with 30 years of experience covering the NSA, conducted a community Q&A session, and the result was posted by Reddit user GloriousDawn, who found it on Attrition.org. Attrition.org is a site that works toward following and uncovering information on the security industry, but do keep in mind that the page on NSA search keywords has not been updated since 1998. Nonetheless, here are 8 of the list’s most noteworthy terms.

1. Scully

If this has any connection to the fictional FBI Special Agent Dana Katherine Scully from the old sci-fi t.v. series The X-Files (which it likely does), I am disappointed. This show, for those of you who never saw it or forgot, is about Agent Scully and another FBI agent by the name of Fox Mulder and their pursuit of unsolved cases involving the paranormal. Did the NSA then believe that one's mention of a fictional sci-fi character would lead it to people who were paranormal nutjobs and ultimately terrorists?

2. Porno

Ok, so using the word "porno" frequently in your emails may just make you seem like you are either involved in the industry or are just porn obsessed. Apart from those two possibilities and unless there is something I do not know about hacker code, I feel like flagging emails that frequently use the term "porno" would just be for the NSA's leisurely snooping pleasure.

3. Talent

Though it is possible that criminals could be discussing each other's talent of being societal parasites, I would imagine that potential terrorists or law-breakers in general would not spend too much energy using this word to praise each other for their strengths. There must be more to this word.

4. Pixar

When I think Pixar, all I can imagine is cute animations, not people using the word to communicate malicious intentions.

5. Salsa

Salsa (as in the food) is deliciousness and the dance is fun and upbeat! I would hate to see how the word became connected to criminal activity.

6. Texas

This is just too great. So many LOLs. Don't worry, NSA, Texas will not be waging a revolutionary war to become its own country any time soon (or hopefully ever).

7. Veggie

I searched the internet to find how the term "veggie" could be associated with criminal activity and I came across an article that explains how veggie burgers contain an explosive chemical solvent and neurotoxin. I do not want to imagine that making a bomb with a bunch of veggie burger patties is even a possibility.

8. Dictionary

I am unsure if this word was either used as code for something else, or if it was utilized to track down international criminals who constantly emailed their buddies about how they needed a dictionary to get around. No matter why the NSA considered "dictionary" a term worthy of flagging; upon first glance, it seems like a word that would yield too many irrelevant results.

Here’s the remainder of the compiled NSA keyword list. More of these words will likely humor you.
