Two polar opposite outcomes Thursday. Spain's 10-0 thumping of Tahiti (in its first senior FIFA tournament, nonetheless) smashed Cup records, paced by Fernando Torres' and David Villa's combined seven goals. Spain's stars offered a powerful reminder of just how dominant this team can be, even against a shoddy opponent. Torres kicked off the scoring right away, netting a goal in the fifth minute. He would go on to score four, along with Villa's hat trick, two from David Silva and another from Juan Mata. The win springs Spain into the semis with Brazil and Italy.

Uruguay, meanwhile, touted strong defense to edge past Nigeria 2-1 in the late game Thursday. In his 100th consecutive appearance for Uruguay, Diego Forlan netted the difference-maker, a goal in the 51st minute that would be the final score of the night. Captain Diego Lugano also scored, opening things up in the 19th, while Nigeria's lone goal came from athletic midfielder John Obi Mikel. The win puts Uruguay in fantastic position to join the three powerhouses in the semis, needing just one point in their final match with lowly Tahiti. Nigeria will have to tie or upset Spain in the final round of group B play.
