Edward Snowden In Russia: Updates On the NSA Leaker's Location

Impact

Yesterday was an eventful day for Edward Snowden and those following his story. Here is a short recap of some of the key events that occurred from the time he left Hong Kong up to his flight to Ecuador.

The U.S. issued a warrant to extradite Snowden, only to have Hong Kong reject it on the basis that the United States did not provide sufficient documentation. He then left for Russia freely despite having had his U.S. passport revoked.

Politicians in the U.S. expressed their frustration towards Snowden's escape. Keith Alexander, head of the NSA, explained that Snowden is "an individual who is not acting, in my opinion, with noble intent." All the while, others targeted the international community in their dialogues about Snowden. Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) expressed his disapproval of Snowden's escape to Russia, stating that "Putin always seems almost eager to stick a finger in the eye of the United States — whether it is Syria, Iran, and now of course with Snowden."

The Ecuadorian ambassador to Russia awaited Snowden at the airport. This was one clue that tipped off the media of Snowden's final destination.

Sunday afternoon, Ecuador's foreign minister tweeted that Snowden had requested asylum.

More updates to come shortly.
