5 Republicans Who Are Not Waging a War on Women

Impact

With Republican anomalies such as Connie Morella and Olympia Snowe no longer in office, these five Republicans are stepping up to prove women’s issues are non-partisan, by putting down their weapons in the GOP's War on Women:

(1) Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska)

Sen. Murkowski of Alaska was the first Republican senator to specifically express support for the beleaguered Planned Parenthood last March. She openly showed opposition to the House’s proposition to defund the organization saying she believes it “provides vital services to those in need.” As a member of the Republicans For Choice and The Wish List (women in the Senate and the House who are pro-choice), she represents a larger group of Republicans who oppose their party on these issues.

(2) Meg Whitman

President of Hewlett-Packard Meg Whitman is an advocate for all women having access to abortion —including public funding for abortion. She doesn't “think we can take choice away from women and their partners and doctors.” Whitman previously ran for Governor of California, becoming the third woman in a 20-year period to run for the position, making a statement that more women should be involved in politics. In the wake of various GOP statements on women’s health, Whitman’s extremely high powered job and run for office help fight some of the marginalized women’s issues, such as the lack of representation in both major companies and government.

(3) Senator Mark Kirk (R-Illinois)

Illinois Senator Mark Kirk is a major proponent of women’s health. In 2010, he voted no against funding health care providers that do not provide abortion info. Further, Kirk also voted against banning Family Planning funding in U.S. aid abroad. Voting in support of on one of the most contentious women’s health issues across all party lines, Kirk supports emergency contraception for rape victims at all hospitals.

(4) Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine)

Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine came out against the House vote to defund Title X last year. In the face of intense opposition from people in her own party, her support of family planning funds makes her a courageous Republican figure crusading for women across America. She also was one of three Republican Senators to oppose the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban.

(5) Kansas State Senator Jean Schodorf

Jean Schodorf, Republican Senator for the Kansas Legislature, proves that women’s health is not a partisan issue. She has a 100 percent pro-choice voting record in the Kansas Legislature. From the onset of her election in 2000, she has advocated for a plethora of women’s issues. She supported efforts to provide comprehensive sex education for the youth of Kansas as well as efforts to subsidize health care for low-income women. She also proposed prevention legislation that helped prevent planned pregnancy.
