Cosmos Trailer: Watch Neil deGrasse Tyson Be a Total Badass

Comic-Con is a celebration of all things fantasy and fiction. A sneak preview of a documentary doesn't seem to fit in much. Yet the trailer for Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey is what's buzzing after the weekend festival in San Diego came to a close Sunday.

The program, which airs in an hour-long documentary format starting in the spring of 2014, was spawned from Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage series in 1980. A wild teaser that comes in at under four minutes features cosmic imagery, microscope slides, and a whole lot of ambiguity.

Cosmos was narrated and created by Sagan, and after his death in 1996, there have been numerous efforts to revive the program. Family Guy funny man Seth MacFarlane provided funding for over 800 boxes of Sagan's lost notes to be donated to the Library of Congress in 2012. It's that material that inspires a re-up of Cosmos for FOX next fall.

Despite the original Cosmos setting records for PBS viewership, some critics have been reluctant to embrace the new show's popular appeal. A series of science documentaries may seem to have no place on a primetime network with a cartoonist as an executive producer, but if this trailer is any indication, Cosmos should be as appealing aesthetically as it is educationally. With Teen Mom, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and a million other brain-numbing programs currently on air, some educational, if not trippy documentaries isn't a terrible idea.

The show will also be produced by Ann Druyan, Sagan's widow, and will be narrated by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Both claim that the show has a wider appeal than a typical science program.

FOX, MacFarlane, and Carl Sagan are a strange pairing, but so is science studies and stoners, the presumed demographic for Cosmos. Check the Comic-Con preview below.
