Editor's Note: Former New York governor and candidate for NYC Comptroller Eliot Spitzer published an op-ed on PolicyMic explaining why he's running again for office. Spitzer agreed to write short follow-up responses to the most Mic'd commenters in the discussion on his article. Read his responses to three PolicyMic questions below.

When I was AG I worked hand-in-hand with Attorneys General across the country. But there are times when standing up for people requires that one stands alone as I did when I supported marriage equality in 2006; and when my office wrote an unprecedented report on the problems of stop and frisk in 1999; and when as Governor I stood up to support  drivers' licenses for undocumented immigrants. When you're doing the right thing you shouldn't have wait for others catch up.

If I am fortunate enough to be elected comptroller, the first thing I will do is audit the MTA to ensure that your dollars are spent wisely and that the cost of commuting remains as low as possible. But ultimately the most important factor in containing the MTA’s rising costs is ensuring the city receives its fair share of federal funding. The MTA is the lifeblood of the city and I support efforts to increase funding for the largest public transit system in the country.

The measure of a person isn't whether you get knocked down, it's how you get back up. I've made mistakes, but I've also made a difference because for me, politics isn’t a job, it’s a cause. I've fought to give a voice to those who had gone unheard and stood up for what was right even when it wasn’t popular or easy. As comptroller, I will continue to protect New Yorkers and their money.
