5 New Songs Every Music Lover Needs to Hear This Week

Culture

Labor Day weekend is over, and summer has officially come to an end. However, that doesn't mean an end to peppy new music. These five new songs that are guaranteed to hype you up, whether you're heading back to work or back to school.

1. "Jennifer" by Little Comets

Little Comets’ album Life Is Elsewhere was finally released in the United States at the end of August. It features the English band's fabulous single, “Jennifer.”  Check it out, but be careful. It's one of those wonderfully catchy tunes with deceptively sad lyrics; despite its pop feel, the song is about a breakup. Even so, the impressive guitar work and sing-along chorus make it a perfect end-of-summer song.

2. "LoveHate Thing" by Wale, Featuring Sam Dew

This isn’t an entirely new song — the video came out in late June — but this fantastic single off Wale’s The Gifted is not to be missed. The beat is instantly mesmerizing, and Sam Dew’s velvety voice fits perfectly. Wale’s at the top of his lyrical game, talking meaningfully about his rise to fame, and his home, Washington, D.C.

3. "Stop The World I Wanna Get Off With You" by Arctic Monkeys

The Arctic Monkeys’ new album, AM, is dropping next week, and judging by the singles they’ve released, it’s going to be incredible. This track is the B side to the new hit, “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” The boys haven’t stopped focusing on partying, but this song takes a more solemn and romantic turn. It’s almost like Modern English's "I Melt With You," but for our so-called hookup culture.

4. "The Wire" by HAIM

We can’t get enough of the band HAIM, and the song "The Wire" is no exception. It’s a perfect song to transition from summer to fall, and it tells a relatable story of going back and forth on a relationship. The rhythm will give you a jump in your step as you walk to class, and it makes for a perfect study-break song, because you can’t not dance when it comes on.

5. "Garden Greys" by Wildcat! Wildcat!

The band Wildcat! Wildcat! put their new single out just in time for the release of the mini-documentary Hello Everywhere, which captures their performance with Passion Pit at SXSW. The song, "Garden Greys," showcases their knack for matching airy, beautiful vocals and harmonies, complex sound mixing, and a good variety of instruments. The lyrics urge you to “live while you’re still young,” which might be just the message you need to hear today.
