Tokyo 2020 Olympics: IOC Selects Japan's Capital to Host Summer Games

Impact

The International Olympic Committee announced on Saturday that it has picked Tokyo to host the 2020 Summer Olympics during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The announcement came after Tokyo, along with Mardid and Istanbul, made final presentations to the IOC.

There were some concerns over picking Japan's capital city because of the recent developments of the leaking radiation from the Fukushima nuclear reactor. In the end, however, the IOC, which votes by secret ballot, selected Tokyo over Istanbul (Turkey's capital). Committee members expressed worry over Turkey's recent political protests.

Tokyo last hosted the Summer Olympics in 1964, the first time the games had been held in Asia. For that selection, it beat out Detroit, Vienna, and Brussels.

Tokyo finished third in voting during the selection for the 2016 Summer Olympics, when the IOC ultimately selected Rio de Janerio to host.
