Syria News: New Resolution Will Allow Military Strike If Talks Fail

Impact

Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has now announced plans to draft a new congressional resolution authorizing military action in Syria, if political talks fail.

Levin said that the aim of the resolution is to keep the possibility of a military strike on the table, as "it would help keep the pressure on for a political resolution."

Addressing the nation last night, President Obama said that he will delay plans to carry out a military strike against Syria, as Russia's proposal "has the potential to remove the threat of chemical weapons without the use of force."

“It’s too early to tell whether this offer will succeed, and any agreement must verify that the Assad regime keeps its commitments.”

Syria has said that it would be ready to comply with plans to hand over its' chemical weapons to the international community.

"We are ready to inform about the location of chemical weapons, halt the production of chemical weapons and also show these objects to representatives of Russia, other states and the United Nations," said Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem.

President Barack Obama has been considering military action against Syria, after alleging that the country's regime was behind a chemical attack near Damascus on August 21.
