Navy Yard Shooting: 12 Reported Dead In First Official Toll

Impact

DC Mayor Vincent Gray emerged at 2pm Monday to report that there have been 12 fatalities so far as a result of Monday morning's shooting at the NAVSEA headquarters in the Navy Yard in Southeast Washington, DC. The number of fatalities was not confirmed until Mayor Gray's announcement, and until now reports have varied widely.

At least one police officer was injured by gunfire. Police arrived on the scene in approximately seven minutes, according to Police Chief Cathy Lanier. She reported that there is still no known motive for the shootings. She insisted that there is no reason at this time to connect the incident to terrorism. Lanier noted that the investigation has now transitioned to an FBI lead.

Two possible shooters are still reported at large. One, a white male between 40 and 50 years of age wearing a tan military-style uniform and a beret style hat, and the other a black male between 40 and 50 in an olive military-style uniform, approximately 5'10 with greying sideburns. Area residents are being asked to remain inside, and a number of area schools remain on lockdown.
