This Event Was Cancelled Because Of the Shutdown — And It's a Good Thing

Impact

In this post-apocalyptic world where our government has ceased non-essential operations for the short-term future, there is a silver lining emerged amongst the clouds. A Ku Klux Klan rally planned for Oct. 5 has been canceled because of the government shutdown.

The national parks are closed due to the shutdown, so Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania rescinded all special permits for events, including the Klan's rally. Now that millions of Americans are suffering without a live stream video of pandas at the National Zoo, they can be assured that hate speech will not be heard on the hollowed grounds where a historic Civil War victory. I can only imagine the outrage we would be seeing from former Kleagle and Senator Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) if he were still alive. This shutdown, perpetrated by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is uniting Americans in a mutual disdain for the Klan.

All kidding aside, the Klan does demonstrations like this to elicit an emotional response and draw attention to their cause. They're like children acting out. The best thing we can do is ignore them and their message of hate. Now, while they have the same constitutional right to free speech as you or I, I am especially thankful for the shutdown. At a time where Americans have more than enough to worry about at home, at least the people of Gettysburg, Penn. won't have to deal with hate speech soiling sacred ground.
