Families, Disabilities, and the Safety Net

Impact

The ACA should indemnify every American family against the life-altering or life-threatening illness of a child. Conditions like pediatric cancer, spina bifida, cystic fibrosis, and so forth, affect a small percentage of children. If your child is in that percentage, it affects 100% of your life, for the rest of your life.

When the limits of insurance are reached, there should be no limit to America's willingness to provide for the most fragile among us.

The moral case is clear. Here is the economic case: The country is broke. We need producers in the economy.

If we took care of these families, the parents would have the freedom to build careers and companies. They could be secure in their homes.

Conservatives should support this: it strengthens families, is pro-life, costs relatively little, and allows greater workforce participation. This does not make the safety net wider, but it makes the net stronger for the people who need it most and for reasons outside of their control.
