And the 2014 Emmy Nominees Are ...

Culture

If last year's Emmy nominations were dominated by the unexpected prevalence of Netflix, this year's nominations are all about hammering home the many tiered definition of television. Streaming services, network, cable, HBO — everyone got a piece of the nomination action.

The Emmy nomination expectation was for this to be the year of Breaking Bad vs. True Detective and while anticipation mill was largely right, the year's biggest nominee was neither. Game of Thrones came in with top nomination billing with 19 (including a handful of rare GoT acting noms), followed closely by Fargo in the mini-series category with 18, American Horror Story: Coven with 17 and Breaking Bad and the Normal Heart each with 16 nominations. The top nominees in order are:

Game of Thrones 19

There were also a few exciting first-time nominees in the mix including Lizzy Caplan from Masters of Sexas well as a handful of nominations for Orange is the New Black (Laverne Cox, Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba, Kate Mulgrew and Natasha Lyonne all got acting nods) and True Detective.

The nominations also already forecast that this might be the year Modern Family loses its four-year running Best Comedy streak. With only three of the principal six cast members nominated, it was a comparatively shaky year for the usual Emmy favorite. Downton Abbey and Mad Men also hung on in the increasingly competitive Drama category. With Game of Thrones, True Detective and Breaking Bad in the drama mix, it's going to be an Emmy's year of die-hard loyalties and incredible shows. Still there were some notable snubs including fan favorites like Orphan Black and The Mindy Project.
