PETA Buys XXX Website, Uses Sasha Grey 'Porn' Pics: Typical Absurd PR For PETA

The animals rights activist group PETA launched a new website that’s rather, er, racy. 

In its latest publicity stunt, the group took their message online to an ".xxx" domain. That’s right, PETA.xxx.

Slate notes that “while the photos on the website aren’t exactly safe for work, they may also be the most tame to be hosted at the porn-specific triple-x domain.” 

It essentially features barely-clothed women promoting vegetarianism and porn stars like Sasha Grey discussing their involvement with the group.

But PETA is no stranger to controversy, with its print and video ads alike having a provocative history. Moreover, the organization has also held some unconventional, attention-seeking demonstrations. Ranging from Nazi comparisons to Playboy models, the list is a long one. Here’s a look at a few of PETA’s most controversial publicity stunts.

McCruelty

PETA dramatically took on McDonald's for their treatment of chickens. Characteristically, their display included almost-naked women, as well as a tweaked catchphrase: "I'm hatin' it." The organization waged a similar campaign against KFC.

Makeout Tour

Yes, they had a makeout tour. Apparently to prove the point that vegetarians make better lovers.

To Animals, All People Are Nazis

A Nazi reference likely tops the list of most controversial references possible. This exhibit consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, juxtaposing factory-farm images with those from Nazi death camps.

Playboy Models in Lettce Bikinis at Capitol Hill BBQ

PETA celebrated National Veggie Dog Day with Playboy models at the Capitol Hill Cookout. Clad in lettuce bikinis. Handing out hot dogs (consistent with their innuendo-based ad strategy).

Pamela Anderson Ad

This ad, featuring a scantily-clad Pamela Anderson, was quickly called out as being sexist. It was banned in Montreal.

Dressing Up As KKK Members

To protest the Westminster Dog Show, demonstrators dressed up as KKK members. PETA acknowledged the uncomfortable comparison, but said it fit — drawing a parallel to attempts to create a "master race" when it comes to pure-bred dogs.

Comparing Decapitation Incident to Slaughtering Animals

After an incident in which a young man was stabbed and decapitated, PETA created this ad, comparing that to the slaughtering of animals. Unsurprisingly, many found it insensitive and thought it crossed the line.
