It was a historic moment when Maame Biney qualified for the 2018 U.S. Olympic speedskating team by sweeping the 500-meter races in December.
As a member of the short-track team, she became the first African-American woman to compete with Team USA in speedskating.

During her celebratory lap, she took a spill — but went down laughing like a champion.
The 18-year-old, who is still in high school, is bringing her infectious spirit to the 2018 Winter Olympics.

She has credited Shani Davis — two-time Olympic gold medalist speedskater — as an idol, as well as Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles and Serena Williams.

While Biney did not advance to the finals of the 500-meter, she still has another shot at medaling.

She’ll try again at the 1500-meter, which airs Feb. 17 at 5 a.m. Eastern.
