Love is priceless. Being love’s witness? A different story. Between pre-party celebrations and the big day, the role of wedding guest can be a costly one.
A recent report from Bankrate revealed that, on average, guests spend $116 on gifts for weddings of close friends and family. But that’s only one expense.
In total — including travel, shower gifts and a few other expenses — guests spend an average of $628 per wedding.
Things get more costly for those in the wedding party, who dole out an average of $728 — which covers gifts, travel, attire and then some.
Even more egregious, for wedding party members living in the Northeast U.S., the average total of spending per wedding exceeds $1,000.
Fortunately, there are ways to find financial relief. Getting to the registry early is one smart move for snagging a meaningful gift without going into debt.
And when it comes to travel, consider options beyond the hotel: Airbnbs, room shares and bunking up may help you save.
If only the phrase “love don’t cost a thing” applied to everyone, huh? Happy wedding season!
