Global Warming is Far from Being Settled Science

Impact

While we often hear of the evidence that global warming is very real and that humans are causing it, there is rarely little if any mention at all of the scientific professionals that do not take global warming as seriously as climate change proponents propagate that we all should. The Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, a nonprofit research group, has a petition circulating on its website admonishing the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December 1997.

Since its inception in 1998, the project has sent out letters to scientists across the nation, urging them to sign the petition. Each envelope that is sent out is stuffed with a letter from the late Professor Frederick Seitz, who served as president of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the Rockefeller University. Seitz received numerous awards throughout his career including the National Medal of Science and honorary doctorates from 32 universities around the globe. In his letter, Seitz states, "Research data on climate change do not show that human use of hydrocarbons is harmful. To the contrary, there is good evidence that increased atmospheric carbon dioxide is environmentally helpful." The petition has been signed and returned by 31,487 American scientists, including 9,029 who have Ph.D degrees.

Although proponents of global warming claim that any honest scientist realizes the impending danger that it poses to the planet, the fact that such a large number of scientists have signed their names onto the petition is proof positive that global warming is far from being a settled science. Furthermore, it is all the evidence I need to personally ignore the irrational claims about climate change in order to channel my energy towards the more fundamental problems that the citizens of Earth face on a daily basis.

If the petition is not enough to help us realize the fallacy of the global warming theory, one need only to consider the reality of past climate changes that occurred in human history. While Greenland is now dominated by a much colder climate, we know that 1,000 years ago Vikings settled there and raised crops and cattle. Four hundred years later, the land became frozen and the Vikings starved.

Such trends of temperature fluctuation are not that uncommon throughout history. Although there was a dramatic increase of carbon dioxide between 1940 and1975, the Earth experienced rather cooler temperatures. This led politicians and the media to sound the alarm that the global cooling could potentially lead to a new ice age.

One would think that a recollection of recent history would be all that is needed to sway the proponents of global warming from their seemingly outrageous claims. Their persistence in promoting such nonsense leaves us with only one of two options to choose as we evaluate the reasons for their intensive propagating of that which is clearly not valid  Either they are completely ignorant of the trends in temperature fluctuations that have occurred throughout the history of Earth’s existence, or they are driven by a quite mysterious hidden agenda. The latter seems more likely considering the fact that the government has spent $79 billion dollar in taxpayer money on global warming research since 1989.

Regardless of the reasons for their intense propagating, what Americans should do in light of knowing this is abundantly clear. Rather than being duped by such nonsense, citizens across the country and the globe should focus their time on more worthwhile causes that will make a real difference in the lives of people around the world.
