4 Powerful Moments from Caitlin Jenner's 'I Am Cait' Premiere

Impact

People everywhere sat down to watch the premiere of the E! reality series I Am Cait Sunday night, documenting Caitlyn Jenner's high-profile coming out and her public introduction to the transgender community. And while she said she aims to educate the world on the serious issues trans people face, including discrimination, high rates of suicide and violence, Jenner also is teaching people everywhere how to embrace LGBTQ family members,

Given Jenner's incredible platform, here are four strong moments from the premiere of her new show:

1. Caitlyn reveals her worries at 4:32 a.m.

From the very top of the show, Jenner shows us what's keeping her up at night: the mantle of responsibility that comes with being such a public face for an entire community.

"I feel bad that these, especially young people, are going through such a difficult time in their life," Jenner says in the show's opening moments. "We don't want people dying over this. We don't want people murdered over this stuff."

2. Esther Jenner experiences her own transition.

Moments into the show, Jenner's sisters and mother head up to her home to meet her as Caitlyn for the very first time. It's a scene where each of them share their worries, but Jenner's mother Esther is clearly anxious.

"You have the same soul you were born with," she says to Jenner. She adds, "I love Bruce. That'll never change. It's gonna take some getting used to, but I want to do what [she] wants."

The rest of Jenner's family comes into accepting her in their own ways. Kim Kardashian visits and plots a "Who Wore It Best" prank between Jenner and her mother, Jenner's ex-wife Kris. Rob Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner make their own appearances and phone calls throughout the show, and Jenner plays a round of tennis with his sister.

Later in the show, Esther Jenner seems more comfortable with her child's transition, and she makes a change, too.

"I was so proud of Bruce when he stood on that podium receiving that gold medal in Montreal," she says. "I had tears and the American flag was going up in the middle and I thought that I could never be more proud of him. And you know, I was wrong. Because I am more proud of him for the courage that he has shown. I love him with all my heart and I certainly love her with all my heart."

3. Kanye acknowledges Cait's big announcement.

Jenner's stepdaughter Kim Kardashian stopped by with husband-rapper Kanye West in tow. Though West is known for his brash statements (and for not wanting to appear on his wife's notorious reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians) West showed only support for Jenner.

"I think this is one of the strongest things that have happened in our existence as human beings, that are so controlled by perception," he said. "You couldn't have been up against more."

4. Cait meets the loved ones of a fallen trans teen.

From the beginning, Jenner makes it clear that her mission is to elevate the stories of other transgender people who are not as privileged as she is. The premiere is no exception. Kyler Prescott, a 14-year-old transgender boy from the San Diego area, committed suicide in May. Upon hearing of his death, Jenner traveled to meet his mother and friends, who confided the many struggles Prescott faced.

Jenner also revealed her own struggles with gender identity, in speaking about her own attempts to commit suicide, a problem she has previously made public.

"I know how these kids can feel," she says. "I've had some very dark moments in my life. I've been in my house with a gun, and said, 'Let's end it right here. No more pain, no more suffering.' That struggle — it's real, and I've been there."

Jenner closed the show with meeting Prescott's friends, one of whom was in tears after revealing that she had also attempted suicide, but was able to persevere and wished Prescott had the opportunity to do the same.

I Am Cait promises to show viewers not only the experience of one person experiencing transition, but also highlight the larger issues of the transgender community. If the premiere is any indication, Jenner, the Kardashians and E! are on their way to creating truly transformative television.
