After news broke on Thursday of an attempted attack in Paris by a man who was reportedly armed with a knife and wearing a fake explosive vest, current Republican frontrunner and real estate mogul Donald Trump decided to weigh in on the news via his Twitter account.

"Man shot inside Paris police station. Just announced that terror threat is at highest level," Trump tweeted. "Germany is a total mess-big crime. GET SMART!"

Um, did Donald Trump just imply that he thinks Paris is a city in Germany? It seems pretty possible that Trump was attempting to make two separate statements, one about Paris and the other referring, perhaps, to a series of attacks on women in the German city of Cologne on New Years. But it also kind of seems like Trump is saying that Paris is in Germany.

The Twitter-verse quickly jumped on Trump's apparent mess-up, making fun of the idea of a politician who can't keep his European capitals in order:

But others jumped in to defend Trump's geography knowledge, including people who are definitely not Trump supporters.

So far, Trump hasn't offered any clarification as to the meaning of his contested tweet — in fact he seems to have moved on from comments about Europe and is back to attacking his rivals. It looks like the world may never know for sure if actually Trump thinks Paris is in Germany. C'est la vie.
