Facebook may be turning into a ghost town.

No, it's not going out of style (yet). In an apparent fit of morbidity, Fusion consulted a statistician who estimated 2098 as the year when profiles representing the dead on Facebook would outnumber those of the living. 

Hachem Sadikki, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Massachusetts, made the estimation after modeling his prediction for when Facebook growth would taper off. Currently, more than 70% of the U.S. population uses the social network.

The date, however, is not a perfect estimation since not everyone with a Facebook profile who dies will be counted. Furthermore, death rates can vary wildly from country to country and difficult to consistently track. 

For a generation increasingly obsessed with online image curation, the news may bring comfort. Live forever, as a Facebook page.
