Parody Twitter Account Receives Backlash for Tweeting Men Like Women Who Wear Less Makeup

At first glance, the Twitter account Google Facts seems legitimate enough. However, it is a parody account, and — like the best ones — it produces clever social commentary in the form of parody "studies." On Tuesday, though, the account took some backlash for a fictitious study on women who wear less makeup, the full text reading: "Studies show that men like women who wear less makeup."

The post, however, was not well-received by any of the account's 1 million-plus followers, nor the rest of the Twitterverse. In the process, it reignited an unnecessary question: Should women wear makeup, and how much? 

"When it comes to makeup, we are our own worst enemies, believing that the world wants to see us in a certain way when in actual fact we're fine the way we are," Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett wrote for the Guardian. "Why do women wear makeup? You could say it's a pinch of patriarchy, a dusting of sex, a smattering of fun and a whole, caked-on layer of misplaced insecurity."

Similarly, the answer — as social media bluntly put it — is who cares.
