50 Shades of Grey Movie Cast: Henry Cavill as Christian Grey Almost a Reality

Culture

With Gangsters Squad’s Ryan Gosling virtually out of the Fifty Shades of Grey casting picture, due to his directorial debut in How to Catch a Monster (starring Drive co-star Christina Hendricks), the road is wide open for Henry Cavill to clinch the coveted role of S&M business tycoon and philanthropist Christian Grey.

And the English actor, rumored to be the very same prototype for the trilogy's main character, seems to be taking advantage of the newly found exposure in the American market. Cavill is known for his role in Showtime’s The Tudors as well as for Christopher Nolan-produced Man of Steel, the most recent installment of Superman to premiere in the summer of 2013.

Rumors about the cast and crew of Fifty Shades of Grey the movie have circulated all summer long. But, so far, only the producers, The Social Network’s Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca, have been hired.

Though it was rumored that actress Angelina Jolie could be the potential director, nothing has been confirmed yet. As far as the screenwriter, American Psycho author, Bret Easton Ellis, had been bidding himself for the job on Twitter – only to be rejected by the partially formed production team.

But the only thing online fans seem to care about is who will be cast as both Christian Grey and his “submissive” innocent and curious college grad Anastasia “Ana” Steel. So far, the “Christian Grey sweepstakes” broadly favor Cavill – with both Gosling and True Blood’s Aleksander Skarsgard as close second and third (not necessarily in that order). As far as the role of Miss Steel, Emma Watson, Mila Kunis and Rooney Mara have been mentioned among a long list of eager starlets.

And, so far, the odds seem to favor Cavill, who, in 2008, shot a rather visionary Fifty Shades of Grey-themed cologne commercial – which Hollywood insiders claim was an advanced audition for the most anticipated and hottest role of 2012.
