50 Shades of Grey Movie Cast: Henry Cavill and Matt Bomer Square Off Over Christian Grey Role

Culture

Man of Steel's Henry Cavill and White Collar's Matt Bomer are squaring off on YouTube for the role of Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey the movie.

Cavill and Bomer star in numerous fan made Fifty Shades of Grey trailers in which followers of both actors are taking to Final Cut Pro to edit scenes of movies and television commercials where the actors appear.

The final product? Sleek and sophisticated "trailers" of E.L. James' upcoming film adaptation, with the already unmistakable Fifty Shades of Grey look that has become pervasive in popular culture.

Bomer, the 35-year-old American television actor, has been a long favored to be cast for the role. The White Collar star jumped to the top of the "Christian Grey sweepstakes" thanks to his popularity among the female audience -- triggered by his intense blue eyes fans say resemble Christian Grey's.

However, Bomer, who is openly gay and is married to his male partner, faced criticism from American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis, who had been bidding himself as a screenwriter for the Fifty Shades project and said Bomer was "too gay" to play the CEO of Grey Enterprises.

Henry Cavill

Man of Steel's Henry Cavill is the other strong competitor in this fight. The 29-year-old English actor, known for his role in Showtime's The Tudors, is up for a big break in America thanks to the Christopher Nolan-produced new Superman installment set to premiere in summer 2013.

Cavill's advantage lies in the fact the he is the prototype for E.L. James' enigmatic character, as rumored online and supposedly demonstrated by this 2008 cologne commercial that features Cavill as a Christian Grey-esque character about to board a helicopter emblazoned with the letter "G" -- in what resembles one of Fifty Shades of Grey more emblematic scenes.
