As a kid, artist Yelitsa Jean-Charles cried when she received a black Barbie for Christmas.
Years later, she started the first natural hair doll line, Healthy Roots, to help African-American girls embrace their natural hair.
A friend Yelitsa made in college embraced her natural hair — and it inspired Yelitsa to do the same.
Then, the real inspiration for Healthy Roots came.
One day in art class, she heard a student say: "It is not our responsibility as artists to be socially aware or responsible."
