On Friday, actor Nate Parker unveiled the poster for his upcoming film "The Birth of a Nation," which tells the story of the Nat Turner-led slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831.

The powerful poster shows Parker, who wrote and directed the film and who plays Nat Turner, with an American flag wrung around his neck like a noose.

The poster sent chills down the internet's collective spine and Twitter was quick to show its approval of the striking image.

The film takes its name "in a very purposeful way," according to the Hollywood Reporter, from the 1915 film, which was little more than an ad for the Ku Klux Klan.
