Over on Instagram, men's nail polish, #MalePolish, is all the rage
Men have been wearing nail polish for thousands of years — since 3200 B.C. to be exact — but that doesn't mean the allure has faded away. Not one bit.
After all, Kurt Cobain did it. David Bowie did it. And now, over on Instagram, men who are neither famous nor rock stars have started to tag pictures of their nails, shellacked and polished, with the hashtag #malepolish.
The #malepolish hashtag first gained popularity a few months back after designer Marc Jacobs started using the hashtag in tagged pictures of himself.
It started off as a series that Jacobs called "Mani Mondays," where he'd show off his latest manicure, which was usually done by nail artist Jin Soon Choi.
"I think it's a way for any man to put the finishing touch to his look, and I am pleased to see them embracing this movement," Choi told W magazine.
According to W, Jacobs even goes out of his way to support the hashtag by commenting on Instagrams that use it.
So, the revolution lives on. As of writing, there are more than 1,000 images tagged on Instagram with #malepolish.
Although the trend may seem taboo, all these men are really doing is embracing a nearly 5,000-year-old tradition, and following in David Bowie's fabulous footsteps.
