Here are the countries that won the most gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics

On Sunday, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro comes to a close.

During the three week duration of the games, champions rose, heroes fell and a host nation divided was united — if briefly — under its love of competition. 

So, which countries emerged from the scrum draped in the most gold? 

The United States took home the most medals handily, with 120 overall, 45 of them gold. Behind them were China and Great Britain, with 70 and 67 overall medals, respectively, but Great Britain had 27 golds to China's 26. 

With over 200 countries competing in the Summer Olympics, the competition was fierce, but luckily there was plenty of glory to go around.
