Storm Reid to play lead Meg Murry in Ava DuVernay's 'A Wrinkle in Time'
With the already promising potential of nabbing Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling to join Oprah Winfrey, the film adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time has now found its Meg Murry.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, 12 Years a Slave actress Storm Reid has been cast for the lead role in the Ava DuVernay-helmed film.
A Wrinkle in Time — based off of Madeleine L'Engle's highly popular sci-fi children's book of the same name — is one of Disney's biggest upcoming projects. The studio has reportedly been looking to cast nonwhite leads in the film.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, DuVernay hopes to "break ground with the movie, making a big tentpole with a cast that is multicultural — or as some have put it, 'mono-cultural' — something rarely reflected in the Hollywood studio world." Reid fulfills the obligation as Murry, and the film is still in the process of casting Meg's friend, Calvin, who the studio also wants to be played by a nonwhite actor.
A Wrinkle in Time follows Meg, Calvin and Meg's younger brother, Charles, on a journey through outer space to find her missing father. They're helped by three angelic beings, Mrs. Whatsit (to be ostensibly played by Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (ostensibly Kaling) and Mrs. Which (Winfrey).
Upon the news, fans shared their enthusiasm for Reid's casting in the Twitterverse.
