Three sources, all while under anonymity, told the Daily Beast that the GOP presidential nominee would mimic The West Wing actress, and make insulting and demeaning remarks about Matlin when she competed in 11th season of the NBC reality TV show.
Trump "would often equate that she was mentally retarded," the Daily Beast quoted one source as saying.
Trump, while filming scenes in the "boardroom" with Matlin in presence, would also allegedly write disparaging comments and remarks about Matlin on a piece of napkin. One note read: "Marlee, is she retarded??"
"He would write notes on his blotter, his papers in front of him, and he would scribble notes in it," another source said. "It was usually just asinine things on them."
Trump, who already came under fire for mocking disabled New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, would also mimick Matlin during breaks from taping, according to the Daily Beast.
Trump "would make fun of her voice. It actually sounded a lot like what he did [to] the New York Times guy," a source who worked on The Apprentice for several years, said to the Daily Beast. "Like, to make it seem like she was mentally not there? [It] sounded like he got a real kick out of it. It was really upsetting."
Trump would also engage with Matlin in a demeaning manner and treat her as if she were mentally handicapped.
"In the boardroom, he would talk to her like she was 'special,'" the source said. "He took her deafness as a some kind of [mental] handicap."
Matlin often defended herself, but other cast members and staff would just laugh along.
"But people would just laugh this [stuff] off — it was just the culture of [the show]," a staff member told the Daily Beast. "But now it's a little more serious because it's not a joke anymore!"
In an interview with People magazine, Richard Hatch, who appeared on the Celebrity Apprentice season with Matlin, said Trump would often comment on Matlin's physical appearance.
"He went back and forth with Marlee," Hatch told People. "No matter how she responded, no matter how politely, he would push it a step further with comments about her looks, and how she was making him feel, and about what he thought of her, and how happy he would be to do something with her."
Hatch said Trump would often make sexual innuendos to Matlin.
"It was a lot of innuendo, far beyond the norm," Hatch said. "It was odd and weird, and people in the boardroom would look at one another, but he didn't care. [Matlin] was with her interpreter, Jack, and I thought, 'Gosh, I wonder if he's comfortable with this?'
"Watching him in the boardroom making sexual comments to Marlee Matlin, to all of the women on The Apprentice, it was obvious that that's just a part of who he is."
Needless to say, Matlin is voting for Hillary Clinton on Nov. 8.
