Virginia Election Results Live: Hillary Clinton wins Virginia

Impact

Hillary Clinton has won the 13 electoral votes of Virginia, the home state of Sen. Tim Kaine, Clinton's running mate.

Clinton has had a steady lead over Republican candidate Donald Trump in Virginia in the weeks leading up to Election Day. A Quinnipiac poll released on Oct. 27 put Clinton ahead by 12 points. A RealClearPolitics average of state polls put Clinton ahead by 5 percentage points.

Trump made a play for Virginia in early October, beefing up his team and pouring $2 million into his campaign there, according to USA Today. Trump held a rally in Roanoke in late September touting his plan to create jobs.

For the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, Virginia swung red, but the commonwealth went blue in 2008 and 2012.
